2013 Azaya Ranch Pinot Noir
The mild winter of 2013 gave our coastal vineyards an early start to the season, providing us with deliciously ripe fruit by mid-September. We brought in our blocks of Azaya Ranch Vineyard on September 19, right in the thick of DG’s pinot harvest. The deep garnet color of the wine, with its jewel-like clarity, follows through with sweet and spicy aromas of brambly berries with a bright lift. In the mouth, the first impression is a basket of summer berries, with the bright lift of the aromas coming through as a sprightly cherry pop at the end. Spicy cinnamon and nutmeg touches provide a tantalizing frame to the fruit. The wine is everything we want from our northern Marin pinot: rich and generous, sweet and juicy, with solid but fine tannins that will make this an intriguing candidate for cellaring to watch as it unfolds in the years to come. The density of the wine will hold up to richer fish dishes, like salmon with a mustard and herb rub, as well as grilled meats. Or, keep it simple and open a bottle, pull out a wedge of Marin cheese (Bellwether’s Pepato is one of our faves) and watch the fog come in from the coast. 279 cases produced.
