Tasting Notes

The 2014 vintage of our ancient vine zin is incredibly vivacious, jumping out of the glass to greet you with ultra-juicy marionberries and lilac, fringed with redwood brush and a pop of caramel. As always, we are amazed by how these old, gnarled vines can produce something so fresh and luscious. The only downside with 2014 is they didn’t produce much, giving us only enough fruit to produce fewer than 300 cases—get this Zin while it lasts! The wine is especially bright, with lively Bing cherry and sweet raspberry flavors supported by firm yet supple tannins. We always think of an elegant Framboise when we taste this wine, reveling in its focused fruit. The brilliant acidity keeps you coming back for another sip, and the beautiful richness without weightiness makes it a great match for a vast range of dishes, from pastas to quail to beef. It’s also wonderful alongside a simple wedge of aged Gouda, with that salty bite of the cheese accentuating the sweetness of the wine.

Winemaker's Notes

Making this wine is all about showcasing the special character of this wonderful vineyard—ebullient fruit, silky tannins, density without heaviness. To achieve this, we employ similar winemaking techniques as for our pinots: hand-sorting the fruit prior to destemming, cold soaking for 7 days, and fermenting in a small open top fermenter with gentle punchdowns. Our zin is aged only in French oak chosen to showcase the sweet fruit and candied spice overtones. The wine was racked once the spring of 2015 to marry the individual barrels, and to allow us to hone our barrel choices for its final aging. For this wine, we love Taransaud barrels for the structure and Asian spice they impart, and Cadus for their creamy caramel tones. The blend developed wonderful richness and breadth over summer and fall, and we bottled it in December of 2015.
