  • Harvest 2022 has begun! | Fall events | Spotlight on Sonoma Mountain

Dan, Melissa, and Michael examining the Ruxton Pinot clusters

A new early record for harvest as we bring in our first 2022 fruit

August 12 marks the official first day of harvest for Dutton-Goldfield, with a block of our Ruxton Pinot Noir taking the honors once again this year as the first grapes brought in. As we posted on FB in July with the picture of our Emerald Ridge Pinot, things looked to be a good two weeks ahead of last year. Stephen was close with his guess of August 19 as our first harvest day for this year, but we bested his prediction by a week, and the August 27, 2021, start date by two weeks and a day.

We expect to have a little lull for a week (good thing, as we're bottling our 2021 Dutton Ranch wines next week!), then will likely see a small onslaught of pinot at the end of the month, then another one a couple of weeks later. If everything falls into place perfectly, chardonnay and our other whites will filter in between the pinot hits, with our zin coming in toward the end of September before our coldest pinot sites. It all sounds so calm and well-paced... if only Mother Nature smiles on us and it actually turns out that way! If all goes well, we might be wrapped up by the beginning of October, with the exception of a couple of vineyards we're hoping to bring in as late harvest dessert wine grapes—stay tuned for great news for those fans of our Happy Ending and Sticky Finish!

As always, we'll report more in our next email, and you can follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more up-to-date news.

    Vineyard Spotlight:
van der Kamp Vineyard, Sonoma Mountain

If you've ever heard Dan talk about vineyards, you know how passionate and excited he gets about these cool spots of the earth he gets to make wine from. For him, it's all about the place—not only the climate, soil, topography, and vines, but the look and feel of the spot, and the caring and personalities of the people who lovingly care for it.

Van der Kamp Vineyard checks all the boxes: it's atop Sonoma Mountain, perched at 1,500 feet, above where the fog and wind collide; its vines are among the oldest pinot in Sonoma County (planted in the 1950s); the Native Americans consider the spot a sacred place where the world began; and Martin, Dixie, Ulysses, and Malia van der Kamp are careful stewards of the land, cultivating heirloom crops along with the vines with organic farming practices that aim to maximize biodiversity.

Van der Kamp Pinot is the newest wine in the DG portfolio, with 2017 being our first vintage. The wine has an earthier and savory quality that provides a nice counterpoint to our fruit-focused Russian River Valley bottlings. The 2018 vintage leads with dusky aromas of Bing cherry, plum, and dried sage, along with a perfume of dried purple flowers. With time in the glass, savory/sweet notes of rhubarb and beet join in. In the mouth, it’s robust and sultry, bringing to mind the earth from which it comes. Black cherry is enveloped in spicy sandalwood and black tea, riding on a backbone of tight, fine tannins. The wound-up quality of the wine in its youth lets you know this will be a good cellar option.

  • Chocolate covered cherries and wild raspberries at 120 years and counting...

    July 8, 2022 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

Looking (and tasting!) great at 120 years old...
    Morelli Lane Vineyard Zinfandel

We feel so fortunate to be able to craft wine from these old bonsai-like vines, and are constantly amazed that something so gnarly and ancient produces fruit that bursts with gobs of berries and luscious spicy notes.

When the last remaining Morelli family member at the property was asked in 1995 (when Dutton Ranch started leasing the vineyard) how old the vineyard was, he replied, "I used to prune the vines when I was a kid, and they were already old then." He was 95 at the time, so we date the vineyard to sometime between the 1880s and 1900. While we don't specificy "old vine" on the label, since there isn't a specific measurement used for that designation, this site definitely qualifies!

The velvety plushness of our 2018 Morelli Lane Zinfandel is apparent right from the first sniff, luring you into the glass. Aromas of chocolate covered cherries and wild raspberries are underlain with violets and baking spices, topped off with a fresh brightness. The mouth is sweet and supple, with luscious raspberry compote leading the way, followed by lavender, nutmeg, and white pepper notes. A vibrant and persistent finish carries the flavors to a balanced and complex end. Baby back ribs or rack of lamb would make great matches, providing an equally rich partner, while a butternut squash ravioli would play up with the sweet nature of the wine. For cheeses, go with big flavors like an aged Gouda, Parmesan, or a well-aged cheddar.

    2018 Morelli Lane Vineyard Zinfandel

    $50
    ($42.50 for Discovery Club members)

Love of the Land is a mid-summer celebration honoring agricultural award winners who are leading the way to preserve Sonoma County’s rich farming heritage. The event begins with a tasting of Sonoma County wine and food. A dinner buffet featuring an array of Sonoma County-grown products follows the reception. The main event is a special program where members of the agriculture community are honored. Special awards include Farm Bureau Hall of Fame, Farm Family of the Year, Luther Burbank Conservation Award, and Friend of Farm Bureau. Funds raised from this event further the organization’s goal of preserving agricultural lands, providing agriculture education for youth of all ages, and protecting clean water for the future.

The reception will also include a silent auction and a dinner buffet featuring an array of Sonoma County-grown products. Dinner will be followed by the awards presentation and live auction. Purchase your tickets here.

On August 13, we are participating in the Petaluma Gap Wind to Wine Festival. Come see us! This promises to be a very special event, where we'll be serving our Petaluma Gap wines in a rustic and gorgeous setting. VIP entry will begin at 1 PM and General Admission at 2 PM. To keep this event safe, comfortable, and more intimate than other tasting events, attendance is capped.  If you haven't already purchased, get your tickets soon before they sell out.

Winemakers will be sharing their most interesting winemaking tales in the “story room” inside the historic barn at the ranch. Event attendees will enjoy delicious bites from OTL Fine Catering, and a gourmet popcorn booth, featuring flavored popcorn to pair with Petaluma Gap wines, hosted by the Presenting Sponsor American AgCredit. For entertainment, guests will be treated to the masterful classical and Flamenco guitar sounds of Bay Area musician Mark Taylor. Firefighters from the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department will be on-site to share tips on fire safety and showcase one of their fire engines.

Was your 4th of July holiday weekend as much fun as ours? With summer in full swing, we hope your travel plans will bring you to Sonoma County and our patio. • Just 5 days left to stock up with Restaurant Pricing!

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

    Five days left!
Pour our Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by the glass at your home every night with Restaurant Pricing: 2022 Edition

Our Restaurant Pricing offers have been so wildly popular the past two years, we had to do it once more! This special deal ends on May 15, so if you want to get in on it, don't delay!

This year, along with our 2019 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay, we have a special wine to add to the mix: our 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir.

As you've heard, we weren't able to bottle any pinot from our Sonoma County vineyards for the 2020 vintage due to the smoke from the fires. Fortunately, our Mendocino vineyards were spared, but due to the uncertainty of the long-term ageability of the wine from our more inland site in Comptche (an important trait for our single-vineyard bottlings), we opted to bottle the wine as a "drink now" offering. To further that point, we bottled the wine in a screw cap, making it easy to bring it along to enjoy everywhere you go—even if that's your own dining room on a Tuesday night!

Our 2020 Mendocino Hills Pinot Noir leads with the classic rich blackberry compote and bowl of fruit we've come to love from this site. Queen Anne cherry, pomegranate, and a touch of vanilla round out the aromas. The mouth is super juicy, plush, and decadent, with a lift of bright red cherry and cola on the spicy baking spice finish. It's perfect with anything on the barbeque, as well as pizza, pasta, and fowl of all kinds.

Our 2019 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay is rich and inviting, with notes of lemon oil, almond brioche, and a tropical mélange of lychee, pineapple, and kiwi surrounding the core of tangerine and zesty Eureka lemon. Honeyed citrus and pear, along with exotic guava and hazelnut, surround the lively and fresh lemon/lime center. A little crushed oyster shell minerality adds an invigorating edge to the fruit, and makes you ponder shellfish matches for the wine.

We're also throwing in $10 flat rate ground shipping on all the packages below.

In the Vineyards: Bloom is in the air

While spring flowers are blooming across the country, we have our own special blossoms lending their gentle sweet scent to the air: the tiny flowers on our grapevines.

Here is our Emerald Ridge Pinot on May 9. In this cluster, the caps have come off the bud and the stamens with their anthers containing the pollen at the tips are ready to pollinate the center pistil. Each flower you see has the possibility of becoming a grape berry if all goes according to plan. We had a weekend of unsettled weather, including a few little rainstorms, but hopefully not enough to cause havoc in the pollination cycle.

A belated but very happy Mother's Day to all you Moms out there! We hope your family showered you with love, laughs, and plenty of your favorite wine.

  • New releases of all kinds! Plus the return of a favorite...

    April 8, 2022 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

Our new release Chardonnay is a star already!

2019 Walker Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
    94 points, Wine Enthusiast

"...at once fairly full and yet light on its feet with a neatly meshed mix of sweet apples and creamy oak running its very considerable length"
~ Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine

We are unabashed Chardonnay lovers at Dutton-Goldfield, as this bottling proves—we started making it because the winemaker wanted to drink it! This wine is everything we want of Green Valley Chardonnay: powerful citrus fruit and tense acidity wrapped in the candied setting of classic chardonnay winemaking. Situated 500 vertical feet above Purrington Creek on fluffy Goldridge soil, the block was planted in the early 1980s, and produces the tiny berries with thick skins we love from old Wente in Green Valley. While the majority goes into our Dutton Ranch Chardonnay blend, we take our very favorite barrels for this limited bottling.

The 2019 season imparted a little extra luscious richness to our lively Walker Hill Chardonnay, wrapping the citrus core with a satiny texture. The nose leads with an orchard of aromas, ranging from lemon blossom, Asian pear, and Granny Smith apple. Notes of pineapple, dried apricot, and brioche provide a plush backdrop. This intricate fruit mélange and fresh/creamy dance follows through in the mouth, with Eureka lemon, kiwi, and papaya flavors interlaced with gardenia and crème brûlée. Beautifully balanced until the end, the wine finishes with ginger-lemon drops kissed with toffee.

    Brittany's New Release:
Meet the tiniest member of Team DG, Baby Veda!

We are so excited for Brittany, our wine club manager, and her husband Chris, who welcomed their baby girl on Saturday, April 2. Join us in sending our big congratulations to the Alejos family!

Brittany reports that Veda Rae is a great baby, which just means that our powerhouse Brittany will probably be looking for things to do before too long! She'll be taking a few months off, but our members can count on seeing her at our Wine Club Luau this summer.

Look for news and your invitation to the Luau and other upcoming club events soon!

    The Return of a Favorite:
Not a wine, but a wine pourer—David Hewitt is back!

As so many of you know, David opened our tasting room back in 2010, and was with DG for seven years. He decided to go see what the rest of the wine world had to offer, but realized his home is here with us. We're thrilled to have him back in our tasting room, sharing his love of our wines with our wonderful guests. He's working Thursdays through Sundays, so make plans to come by and say hello again.

Our tastings are still by appointment, but if we have availability, we're always happy to take walk-ins. If you're in the neighborhood, take a chance and stop in, or give us a call at 707.827.3600 to see if we have space.

    In the Vineyards:
The 2022 season is off to a warm start

Emerald Ridge Pinot and Morelli Lane Zinfandel

What do you get when you put together 35" of early rains and a warm a dry winter? A quick-growing, ahead-of-normal start to the 2022 growing season.

Our extremely wet Fall filled all the Dutton Ranch ponds (opposite of 2020, when they had about 6" of sad little puddles in their bottoms), setting the vineyards up for whatever may lay ahead. As you can see from the pictures of Emerald Ridge pinot and Morelli Lane zinfandel vines, the growth is looking strong, lush, and green. The little clusters are forming nicely, with nearly all shoots having at least 2 bunches as we hope for. We had a bit of frost very early before the vines had pushed out, so there hasn't even been much need for frost protection watch this year. Our typical last frost date is late April, but we've been known to have frost into May and even early June. Fingers crossed that's not the case this year!

Bloom usually happens in May, but we could see it sooner this year at some sites if the warm weather continues. This week we even hit 90 degrees in Sebastopol, so that will definitely keep pushing things along at this rapid pace.

Sunday is National Hug Your Dog Day, so be sure to give your pooch an extra squeeze!

We have several winery friends with dogs named Dutton, including the super cute (and huggable) one here, as well as our wonderful club members the Johnson's IG star @dutton_thekiawahisland_cavapoo. Keep the dog love coming!

    2021 Rosé of Pinot Noir

The core of our Rosé this vintage are three of our most aromatic Pinots: our Emerald Ridge and Fox Den vineyards in Green Valley, along with our Mendocino County star, Docker Hill. The wine has that beautiful core of acidity you want from Rosé that makes it so refreshing, with just enough roundness to make it a bit decadent. We tasted the pre-bottled version of the wine at our staff meeting last Monday night, and the comments from the team included: watermelon, peach, lively, stone fruit, "a day at the beach!", strawberry, and candy apple. We expect to bottle just about 250 cases and the release retail price will be $33 per bottle (if there's any left).

  • Mother Nature's whiplash | Library wines to get you through the rest of winter

    February 28, 2022 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

From record highs to record lows,
the 2022 season is off to a quirky start

We all got excited after harvest last year when the skies opened and we had record rainfall. Finally, a great start to our rainy season! We clocked around 30 inches in our neighborhood by the time 2021 ended, putting us at or above seasonal averages.

After that, we gave new meaning to "dry January" and have continued that into February, with only a tiny 1½ inches coming down since the beginning of the year. Unseasonably warm temperatures added to the party, with a full week of days reaching into the upper 70s and low 80s. Mother Nature decided to send us the polar (pun intended) opposite of that this week, plunging our morning temperatures into the 20s, as you can see from the frosty vineyard picture above.

So, what does all this mean for our vineyards and the grapes that will be made into our favorite beverage? Fortunately, no bad news so far, and even some good, as many ponds were filled with the big rains, so we're looking pretty solid for water here in our neighborhood, where the rainfall was some of the heaviest. Also, while the vines looked like they might start waking up early with the warm weather, it turned cold before that happened, so it's looking like we'll be back on track for our typical mid-March budbreak. As long as we don't have this sub-30s weather come back after the buds start unfurling their little leaves, we should be in good shape and not see any negative effects on the upcoming crop. We're also forecast to possibly get a bit more rain in this coming week, and our state really needs that to keep us out of a drought situation, so get out your raindance shoes to help that turn into a reality!

Library wines to get you through the rest of winter

While we're all enjoying our cozy nights by the fireplace and cooking at home, we've found ourselves hitting our cellars for some older wines to accompany these meals. Wines with a few years of age on them have additional breadth and gorgeous secondary notes that provide the wine with an extra dose of depth, along with savory characters that make them even better matches for these dishes.

We have a limited number of magnums available on some of our library wines as well. Email us for more information.

Orders of four or more bottles of library wines receive shipping included.
