Pinot grapes at Dutton Ranch's Campbell Vineyard...
Harvest is almost here! (in some places)
It's the most wonderful time of the year for those of us in wine country! The culmination of all the year's labor is coming together for the growers, and the pass-off to the winery at hand.
Dutton Ranch started harvesting grapes for sparkling wines this week (which always come in early so you get fruit at higher acids and lower sugars). We're heading into a very warm spell, and may even hit 100 (or more!) today and for the next week here in Sebastopol, which is a rarity. As a result, picks for still wines in Steve's Dutton Ranch vineyards in Green Valley are filling up his scheduling whiteboard.
With Dutton-Goldfield's vineyards strung along the coast from Marin to Mendocino, that means different vineyards are at different stages of ripening for us. The picture of the Pinot cluster at the top was taken last weekend at Dutton Ranch's Campbell Vineyard in Green Valley of Russian River Valley; the picture of Pinot here was taken the next day at Bill Aubuchon's Docker Hill Vineyard in Mendocino County—big difference!

This breadth of vineyards and ripening rate means the picking time for us extends to about 6-8 weeks—typically, we start around Labor Day and wrap up sometime before Halloween (or sometimes even creep into early November). While Dutton-Goldfield doesn't have any of our vineyards on the picking board yet, that might soon change, and push us into an earlier than Labor Day start to our harvest (sorry, Dan). Good thing our interns are starting next week to get the place clean and prepped for the incoming fruit.

 Yes, we are still open on our patio, and invite you to visit us. In order to maintain our social distancing and sanitizing protocols, tastings are available only by appointment. We have a maximum of 3 appointments each hour, so we can ensure we have adequate space between tables of groups, and time for cleaning and sanitizing, and can take a maximum of 4 people per group at our tables.
