Fox Den Vineyard - August 12, 2021 Docker Hill Vineyard - August 12, 2021

Harvest countdown continues...

We've had an eventful summer, welcoming guests to the winery from near and far. As we head into mid-August and the last growing days of the season, we hope for continuous warm days and no wildfires! Our hearts and warmest sympathies are with those affected by the Dixie fire in Plumas County.

While it's been hot in many parts of the country this summer, Sonoma County has experienced a more mild season with fewer heat spikes compared to previous years. It has been an ideal summer for the grapes and we're looking forward to an excellent harvest. We will likely harvest grapes from Green Valley first (right around Labor Day), as the Mendocino and coastal vineyards (Docker Hill Vineyard, Redwood Ridge Vineyard, McDougall Vineyard and Devil's Gulch Vineyard) have experienced cooler temperatures this Summer resulting in veraison occurring a bit later.

"As we begin harvest, drought conditions persist but we are in great shape for a fantastic vintage. All the early work the vineyard team has done is paying off. Our vines look healthy and well managed, and the fruit looks spectacular." - Steve Dutton

Sustainability: Green is Good

Dutton-Goldfield is committed to preserving the environment and being good citizens in our neighborhood. From our vineyards and our winery, to our tasting room and offices, we embrace green practices, reducing, reusing, and recycling as much as possible.

Our Sonoma County vineyards, including all of Dutton Ranch’s vineyards, are Certified Sustainable under Sonoma County’s landmark program that includes:

  • Being socially responsible in how growers work with their neighbors, employees, and community. One example of this is that Dutton Ranch provides dorm-style housing for their vineyard workers.
  • Being environmentally conscientious with farming and winery practices. Dutton Ranch’s vineyards have all passed the Fish Friendly Farming Certification Program, which creates and sustains water quality and habitat.
  • Remaining diligent and viable as an economically mindful business, so it may be passed down to future generations.

In the packaging of our wines, we continue green practices to reduce our carbon footprint by:

  • Using infinitely recyclable glass, and purchasing bottles that are produced in the USA with over 40% post-consumer recycled content
  • Utilizing glass bottles that are lightweight, clocking in at about 595 grams—no ridiculously heavy bottles here!

We follow through in our tasting room:

  • We recycle our corks back to our cork supplier, where they are ground up and enjoy an afterlife as a new cork product, such as shoe soles.
  • The tin capsules on the neck of the bottles we pour are also recycled via a local metal recycler.
  • The case boxes are used for carry-out packaging for your wine purchase, which gives a second purpose to what would otherwise be a single-use carton.

We thank you for your support and for helping us be green!

Relax, it's almost here...here's to a great 2021 harvest!
