Spotlight on Marin:
2018 Devil's Gulch and Azaya Ranch Vineyard Pinots are released

As those who know Dan know, he's always up for an adventure, and vineyards that are a little off the beaten path. While many people may have never even tasted a wine from Marin County (understandably, as there are only about 180 acres of grapes planted there, compared to around 60,000 in Sonoma County), we have the honor of crafting not one, but five wines from Marin. Mark Pasternak is the common thread among all these sites, and how we ended up making wines that express these singular places.

Mark makes his home at Devil's Gulch Ranch, located in the town of Nicasio in western Marin. He purchased the 65-acre ranch in 1971 and has turned it into a diversified family farm, which produces rabbits, pigs, and sheep for some of the finest restaurants in California, in addition to winegrapes. Dan has been making Pinot from Mark's vineyard since the early 1990s when he was at La Crema Winery, and we've been making it under the Dutton-Goldfield label since 2000 (we added his teeny block of Gewürztraminer to our line-up shortly after that, his Chardonnay in 2015, and the Riesling he farms in 2011). In 2009, Mark also introduced us to the Azaya Ranch Vineyard in the Petaluma Wind Gap, which he planted for the McEvoy family. We're thrilled to join Mark Pastnernak as proud champions of Marin County winegrowing!

Pinot Noir

The nose of our 2018 Devil's Gulch Pinot Noir leads with sweet wild berries in the forest, ringed with nutmeg and cinnamon. A mélange of brambly berries and redwood duff follows in the mouth, which is both silky and deep. There’s a great breadth and density that keeps luring you back for more and reminds you that this is a wine you’ll want to try bottles of over several years. Enjoy it now with Devil’s Gulch rabbit, pork, lamb, or quail that grow with it, in dishes like bacon-stuffed mushrooms and lamb meatloaf; for cheeses, stay local with Nicasio Valley’s Reserve or Foggy Morning.

The 2018 is particularly luscious in the nose, overflowing with a perfume of sweet raspberries in the summer sun and strawberry compote. The mouth is lithe and bright, with red cherry, fresh cranberry, and pomegranate. Baking spice notes of cinnamon and allspice provide a refined frame to the fruit. Cherry pie continues through the lively and energetic finish. The freshness of the wine makes it a perfect foil for rich accompaniments like rabbit terrine or charcuterie, but you could also go the other direction and keep it light with roasted chicken, a vegetable tart, or grilled salmon.
