  • Green Valley spotlight | 2018 Fox Den Pinot & Rued Chardonnay released

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

    Spotlight on Green Valley

Green Valley is one of the smaller appellations in Sonoma County. It lies in the southwestern part of the Russian River Valley, bounded by the towns of Sebastopol, Forestville and Occidental. It is very tightly delineated, both geographically and climatically, making it among the most consistent of any North Coast appellation.

The fog is Green Valley’s trademark. Green Valley is the first place where the fog comes in and the last place where it burns off, making it the coolest, foggiest part of the Russian River Valley. The predominant soil type (60%) is Goldridge, which has a dark, yellowish, fine, sandy loam surface over a subsoil of golden yellow, sandy loam and fractured sandstone. It's essentially pushed-up sea bottom, as it is the remains of an ancient inland sea that slowly emptied into the Pacific three to five million years ago. It's particularly loved by winegrowers and winemakers for high-quality wine grape production because of its excellent drainage and low soil fertility.

Grape growing in Green Valley goes back to 1836, two years before George Yount (who is credited with starting grape growing in Napa) planted vines in what is now Yountville. After such a strong start, grape growing in Green Valley, along with most of the wine regions in the world, went through a long fallow period because of Phyloxera and sheer economics—almost every other fruit was more profitable.

The Duttons were the first to replant grapes in Green Valley in the 1960s. Even as late as 1976, agents from the UC Davis Agricultural Extension advised against investing here on the grounds that it was too cold and prone to frost, and that Napa was a safer bet. Good thing the Duttons and others didn't listen! They now farm over 1,100 acres of grapes, or more than 80 vineyard sites, in the AVA. Dutton-Goldfield makes more wines from Green Valley than any other area, including our two being released today: Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir and Rued Vineyard Chardonnay.

2018 Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir
"boasts confidence without ever once raising its voice"

Those who know Dan know how much he loves to ride his bike around Green Valley (and beyond). Getting to know the nuances of the climate from the seat of a bicycle is one of the best ways to learn a place. Many rides took him up Stoetz Ridge, which is a warm spot in Green Valley, due to its elevation, and also has great views. One particular plot of land wasn't yet planted in the late 1990s, and he always thought it would make a great spot for a vineyard. When his wife Loie met the property owner during an emergency appendectomy, she mentioned this, and offered to connect him to Dan. Within the year, Steve and Dan were at the site meeting Ed and Sue Smith, and planted the vineyard for them in 2002. Dan started making wine from it for a consulting project in 2004, and then began producing it for Dutton-Goldfield beginning in 2009.

The long 2018 season imparted a great density to our Fox Den Pinot Noir. While we usually think silk when drinking and describing the texture of this wine, this vintage ranges more to satin. In the nose, a mix of red fruits burst into the lead, with sweet raspberry and strawberry interlaced with baking spices. The mouth has a wonderful sweet/tart interplay, dancing from Bing cherry to dried cranberry to alpine strawberry, garnished by cinnamon and nutmeg. The extra bit of weight gives it an especially lengthy finish. We loved Connoisseur Guide's recent comments: "...conveys a marked sense of refinement and sophistication in a wine that is at once accessible and balanced to age. It boasts fine fruity continuity and confidence without ever once raising its voice, and its enlivening acidity, if noticeable, never steers it to tartness."

    2018 Rued Vineyard Chardonnay
Featured in Wine Enthusiast's April Chardonnay article

Did you know that Chardonnay was first planted in California in 1936? That's just one of the fun facts we learned in reading Wine Enthusiast's April article, "Sonoma Chardonnay Comes Alive." In addition to a little history lesson, it also picks some standouts that exemplify the beauty of Sonoma, including our 2018 Rued Vineyard Chardonnay, saying, "...this wine is highly aromatic and fresh. Juicy tropical fruit and tangerine flavors remain crisp and brilliant, leading to a complex midpalate of Meyer lemon and pear. The finish is topped by lasting, lingering layers of hazelnut."

Our Rued Vineyard Chardonnay was planted later than that first vineyard, but is still one of the oldest in the county, having been planted by Warren Dutton in 1969. The budwood he got gives the wine that exotic tropical lychee character and opulent density, while the cool Green Valley site imparts great brightness, giving the wine the perfect combination of richness without heaviness. It was our first single-vineyard bottling, back in 1999, and has been made every year since. The 2018 vintage is especially balanced, with beautiful floral notes framing the fruit, and just a kiss of nutty toastiness on the finish. It's an excellent pairing with Valley Ford's Estero Gold Reserve cheese we match it within our Wine & Cheese experience, which we're excited to say we're relaunching in April. Make an appointment to taste it for yourself!

  • Budbreak unfurls the 2021 season | 2018 McDougall Vineyard Pinot scores 96 points!

    March 11, 2021 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

Budbreak unfurls the 2021 season with hope and optimism

We love this time of year, when Spring is starting to peek out, bringing a regrowth and renewal all around us. It gives us hope and optimism as we look ahead to what's to come this year. Seeing our tiny grapevine buds go from little fuzzy q-tips to baby leaves makes us smile with a little skip of excitement. We started seeing the vines wake up this week, which is fairly on schedule for our "typical" mid-March budbreak. The picture above is from our Emerald Ridge Pinot vineyard on Tuesday afternoon. Only a few of the vines have begun to burst forth with their tiny buds, and with cool weather and some much-needed rain this week, the start should continue to be slow and steady. Now that the buds are beginning to open, Steve and his crew are preparing to leap into action overnight to protect them from freezing temperatures. All their frost protection sprinkler systems are being checked and flushed, and fans that move the inversion layer are being oiled and tested before they're needed.

Join us in a toast to the kick-off of our 2021 season. Here's to a year of beautiful weather, a little (lot) more rain before May, no fires, and health and happiness all around!

This just in... 96 points for our
    2018 McDougall Vineyard Pinot Noir

You're the first to hear it—we just received the news from Wine Enthusiast yesterday that our 2018 McDougall Vineyard Pinot Noir will be receiving 96 points in their June/July issue! Get your supply now before the magazine comes out and everyone else finds out about our Sonoma Coast star.

We've been making wine from this vineyard near Annapolis since the 2001 vintage. Warren Dutton went to high school with Barb McDougall, and when he went to visit Barb and her husband Mac up on their beautiful and rugged property, he spied a perfect hilltop 9-acre field that he told them they should let him plant a vineyard on. The site is a warm spot in this chilly area, with perfect southern exposure and protected from the harshest coastal weather by another ridge. He planted the vineyard in 1998, the same year Steve and Dan partnered to launch Dutton-Goldfield. When Steve saw the site, he thought it was stunning and the fruit would make a great wine. When he brought Dan up to check it out, Dan agreed completely, and so it became one of the first single-vineyard wines in our portfolio.

Barb McDougall has become a welcome, smiling fixture at our annual wine club Taste of Place event, sharing stories from the vineyard. She hosted our DG team for a vineyard visit in 2019, greeting us with her delicious home made apple cake, which was a most welcome settling to our bellies after the curvy coastal drive! You can get the recipe for her apple cake on our website

The 2018 vintage is particularly intense, leading with robust aromas of Bing cherry, black raspberry, and red beets, with a hint of savory bay. There’s a pretty whiff of dried lavender, along with crushed granite, providing additional complexity to the nose. The mouth is equally bold, with high-toned cherry, pomegranate, and cranberry fruit framed by cigar box spice and black tea notes. The texture is supple but firm, and gains breadth and softness with time in the glass. An assertive finish of cherry, Ceylon tea, and minerality confirm this will be a wine that goes the distance.

Last Call on another last vintage:
    2018 Green Valley Vineyard Gewürztraminer

Looking for something that will go great with that slightly spicy Asian carry-out dinner? We are down to our last 30 cases of our 2018 Green Valley Vineyard Gewürztraminer, and this is our last vintage of this wine, so stock up while you can. We love its aromatherapy nature—the feeling that you're walking through a garden of spring flowers just makes us happy! Connoisseur's Guide noted: "Wonderfully aromatic and exceptionally keen in varietal focus, the latest from DG is a firmly balanced, dry-finished Gewurztraminer that smacks of rose petals and ginger and exhibits a marvelous sense of finesse evident at every turn."

  • 2018 Freestone Hill Pinot is released

    March 2, 2021 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

The media has great things to say as we say goodbye:
2018 Freestone Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is released, our final vintage

Freestone Hill has long been one of our most popular wines, getting rave reviews from our club members and mailing list friends, as well as high scores from the critics. But it's probably the descriptions about the wine that we love the most. Here are a few quotes for the 2018 vintage:

"This is an intensely feral, wild wine, that is sultry in forest floor, tree bark and black tea. Supple texture supports a wave of firm tannin and complex structure, with crunchy fruit tones of pomegranate and cranberry seasoned in cardamom."

"...lovely wild blackberry tones on the nose with shades of peat moss and white truffle shavings alongside cola. The palate is dense, showing a wonderful beam of salinity that falls on the rich dark fruits with cola tones on the palate. Downright delicious to enjoy in its youth, this outstanding new bottling will enjoy another decade of life in the cellar."

"Ripe black cherry and plum fruits; spicy, with cranberry notes.  Freestone Hill has good depth of flavor, with firm but not intrusive tannins, and a long, fruity finish.  It demonstrates the fullness and fruitiness of the better Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs.  It’s a wine of substance and character, with complex, dark fruits showing on its finish."

The 2018 vintage overall has been praised by the media for its combination of elegance and richness, producing full-flavored wines with crisp acidity, especially those from coastal vineyards. Our 2018 Freestone Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is a prime example of that, which is a fitting way to end our era for this stunning wine. Yes, we are sad to report that this is our last vintage for Freestone. The lease expired after 2018, and the owner decided to lease it to another winery. While we'll miss Freestone, we're excited about some of the other vineyards coming online in our portfolio that we'll get to share with you in its place. So the big wheel turns.

  • 2020 Rose and Pinot Blanc presale

    February 12, 2021 15:21

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

    It's here!
Our 2020 Rosé of Pinot Noir Presale...
and we've added our 2020 Pinot Blanc to the offer this year

We'll be bottling our 2020 bright whites in early March, so we're offering your presale opportunity now, with stock-up pricing

This year, we're also extending the same deal on our 2020 Pinot Blanc, and with shipping included on all orders of 2+ cases of either or both wines, you can order enough cases to get you through the spring, summer, and all year long. If this is like previous years, we will likely sell out with this pre-sale. Regular retail release price on both wines is $30/bottle.

    2020 Rosé of Pinot Noir

The core of our Rosé this vintage is our two outer limits vineyards to the south and north: our Devil's Gulch Pinot Noir in Marin County, and Docker Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir in Mendocino County. We pressed the grapes early with just enough skin contact to give the wine that beautiful salmon color we love. The wine bursts with cherry, watermelon and a touch of Gala apple, and finishes long and clean with a kiss of honeydew melon.

    Presale Case (12 bottles)
    $288
    (Only $24/bottle!)

    Presale 6-pack
    $162
    ($27/bottle)

    2020 Shop Block Pinot Blanc

Our crowd-pleasing Pinot Blanc loved the even 2020 growing season at the Shop, which gave us a wine that perfectly balances the brightness with just the right amount of creaminess. The nose pops with lemon peel and Asian pear in the lead, with apricot and peach providing the background. The core of bright fruit is encased by a silk chiffon texture, ending with fresh citrus.  A nice mineral note makes you think about the shellfish this will match so well.

    Spotlight on Marin:
2018 Devil's Gulch and Azaya Ranch Vineyard Pinots are released

As those who know Dan know, he's always up for an adventure, and vineyards that are a little off the beaten path. While many people may have never even tasted a wine from Marin County (understandably, as there are only about 180 acres of grapes planted there, compared to around 60,000 in Sonoma County), we have the honor of crafting not one, but five wines from Marin. Mark Pasternak is the common thread among all these sites, and how we ended up making wines that express these singular places.

Mark makes his home at Devil's Gulch Ranch, located in the town of Nicasio in western Marin. He purchased the 65-acre ranch in 1971 and has turned it into a diversified family farm, which produces rabbits, pigs, and sheep for some of the finest restaurants in California, in addition to winegrapes. Dan has been making Pinot from Mark's vineyard since the early 1990s when he was at La Crema Winery, and we've been making it under the Dutton-Goldfield label since 2000 (we added his teeny block of Gewürztraminer to our line-up shortly after that, his Chardonnay in 2015, and the Riesling he farms in 2011). In 2009, Mark also introduced us to the Azaya Ranch Vineyard in the Petaluma Wind Gap, which he planted for the McEvoy family. We're thrilled to join Mark Pastnernak as proud champions of Marin County winegrowing!

    2018 Devil's Gulch Vineyard
    Pinot Noir
    2018 Azaya Ranch Vineyard
    Pinot Noir

The nose of our 2018 Devil's Gulch Pinot Noir leads with sweet wild berries in the forest, ringed with nutmeg and cinnamon. A mélange of brambly berries and redwood duff follows in the mouth, which is both silky and deep. There’s a great breadth and density that keeps luring you back for more and reminds you that this is a wine you’ll want to try bottles of over several years. Enjoy it now with Devil’s Gulch rabbit, pork, lamb, or quail that grow with it, in dishes like bacon-stuffed mushrooms and lamb meatloaf; for cheeses, stay local with Nicasio Valley’s Reserve or Foggy Morning.

The 2018 is particularly luscious in the nose, overflowing with a perfume of sweet raspberries in the summer sun and strawberry compote. The mouth is lithe and bright, with red cherry, fresh cranberry, and pomegranate. Baking spice notes of cinnamon and allspice provide a refined frame to the fruit. Cherry pie continues through the lively and energetic finish. The freshness of the wine makes it a perfect foil for rich accompaniments like rabbit terrine or charcuterie, but you could also go the other direction and keep it light with roasted chicken, a vegetable tart, or grilled salmon.

We dipped into our library this year and targeted 2012 as the one you'll want to enjoy now. With an extra six years in the bottle since their release, the wines have evolved into broader, nuttier/earthier representations of themselves. These are three of our favorites from the year.

Everyone loves a big bottle for the holidays. Magnums make dramatic gifts, serve a party (or even a party of 2) happily, and generally make life better. Since the larger bottle enables longer aging, we’re releasing the 2016 vintage this holiday season, so you can pop the corks now and drink up. And we’re extending 10% off, so it’s even easier to go big this year!
For club members, 10% is in addition to your preferred pricing

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

    Dear Friends,

May this Holiday Season bring you connection, compassion, kindness, patience, love, insight, fortitude, and gratitude.

This month I had the fortune of some personal time in canyon country (att. 11/17/20). The grandeur, power, and demand for innovation and resilience the wilds afford brings some perspective and priorities. Bob Dylan sings. “I try my best to be just like I am, but everyone wants me to be just like them.” May we all experience freedom and acceptance.

We at Dutton-Goldfield are grateful for our caring community of colleagues, our conscientious farmers, our attentive neighbors, our heroic firefighters, and our wonderful family of employees and customers.

May we each consider what matters most to us, and live that path.

If Dutton-Goldfield has any small part in bringing you pleasure during this season, that is an honor to us. We thank you.

    Dan

  • Giving Thanks for you | What do Pinot and hardware magnates have in common?

OUR STORY  |  VISIT  |  WINE CLUB  |  SHOP

    Gratitude and Thanks

While this year has certainly given all of us more than our fair share of challenges, it's the way we band together to meet those challenges that always inspires us. We are thankful more than ever for the friendship and support of our wonderful club members and mailing list friends. Your words of encouragement, and funny and passionate expressions of how much you need wine right now, keeps us smiling.

As we get ready for a Thanksgiving holiday a little different than how most of us usually celebrate, we hope you have a grateful day full of love. We raise our glasses to toast all of you—thank you!

A Pinot that will "fix you right up":
2018 Docker Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir

Those of you in New England may be familiar with Aubuchon Hardware (whose slogan is "We'll fix you right up!"), a much loved, long-time neighborhood staple. Owner Bill Aubuchon's lovely wife is Karson, and when her father passed away, his wife mentioned that she'd always wanted to have a vineyard on their beautiful and historic property called Docker Hill, in Comptche in Mendocino County. Bill thought, "great, here's my chance to get in good with my mother-in-law!" So he said he'd love to help make that happen. The next morning, reality set in and he realized he had no idea how to begin, and wondered what he had gotten himself into. But a promise is a promise, so, in 2010 he undertook the project of seeing Docker Hill Vineyard become reality.

It has been, and continues to be a huge learning process, but caring, paying attention, and culling the advice of experts has paid off well. Jose Monzo had been taking care of Karson’s Dad on the property, and together, Bill and Jose (along with much of the Monzo family) have become thoughtful and competent farmers. Their well-earned pride shows in the wonderful fruit, and the entire property. In 2016, a friend told us about this cool, remote vineyard, and Dan was hooked after one visit–beauty talks. We started producing our Docker Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir that harvest.

Jose driving Bill exuberantly around the vineyard—we try to bottle that enthusiasm!

Our 2018 Docker Hill Pinot Noir is everything we love about this part of the world. Deep blackberry and boysenberry lead the nose, luring you in with a sumptuous promise. Spicy sandalwood provides an enticing backdrop to the sweet fruit. Loads of mountain berry follow through in the mouth, with red plum and black cherry chiming in—think decadent Jolly Rancher—along with a little black tea. The wine is broad and solid in the middle, and the texture is soft and plush, before finishing long on a wild blackberry note.

The media have been very kind to our new addition, with the 2018 vintage already earning nice accolades:
