Harvest 2021 ends with a wild, stormy soaking | Wine for your Thanksgiving table

OUR STORY | VISIT | WINE CLUB | SHOP
The 2021 harvest is officially a wrap!
Devil's Gulch Chardonnay officially ends our 2021 harvest seasonWe brought in our last fruit of the 2021 season on October 19, with our Devil's Gulch Chardonnay and last old block of Devil's Gulch Pinot Noir wrapping things up for us. The next day, Mother Nature officially ended harvest for everyone in the area with the first of a series of rains, culminating in our big downpour and crazy winds this weekend. Over the 24-hour period from Saturday night to Sunday night, most of Sonoma County clocked in over 7 inches—in many places, it was nearly as much as we received for the entire 2021 rain season! Today as we write this, the sky is a sparkly blue, and the small lakes created over the weekend are starting to dry in the sun.
The only casualty from the early rainstorm was our Syrah, which didn't get ripe before the rains came. So, sadly, we won't be producing our Happy Ending port-style wine this vintage. We'll see if we can get Dan to release some from our library to share with you this holiday season to make up for it!

The 2021 harvest is almost a wrap!

OUR STORY | VISIT | WINE CLUB | SHOP
The 2021 harvest is almost a wrap!
After a non-stop seven weeks, we are finally relieved to get a bit of a breather today from the fruit avalanche, with only our tiny half ton of Devil's Gulch Gewürztraminer coming in. It was a Devil's Gulch week all around, with Mark Pasternak delivering his beautiful, and relatively bountiful, pinot in three lots on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (nice looking cluster, Mark, and we love the pig suspenders!). That leaves just one block of Devil's Gulch pinot, along with the chardonnay, yet to be harvested. After those, only the late harvest syrah we're bringing in to make our port-style Happy Ending will be left on the Dutton-Goldfield grape incoming spreadsheet. Whew!
While we wrap up the last of the incoming, we are also beginning the fun magic of transforming the grapes to the end product we all love. While some lots, like our Rued Chardonnay, are left to ferment with their indigenous yeast (or "feral," as Dan likes to call it), we innoculate others to ensure that fermentation happens without issues—no one likes a stinky, stuck fermentation. Here we are brewing up a batch to add to our Walker Chardonnay barrels, mixing the powder with wine from the barrel to hydrate it. We even got Dan into the action for siphoning assistance!
Meet the Team: Part 4
Marianne LuzaichWe continue our series showcasing our amazing DG team with one of our longest-tenured mates, the seemingly one-degree of separation from pretty much everyone in West County: Marianne Luzaich!
There's still time to get your 2017 magnums, with shipping included
We're excited to share our magnums from the beautifully balanced and age-worthy 2017 vintage. The wet winter got the vines off to a healthy start, then the generally cool summer and warm harvest season gave us strong vines and canopies, and a long hang time. The wines showcase Dan's winemaking style perfectly: purity of fruit with a strong reflection of each individual single-vineyard site. These wines are delicious now, and will also age gracefully for at least a decade. We produce only a limited number of bottles of magnums each year, so supplies are limited.
Orders 3 or more magnums and receive UPS Ground shipping included!

The fast and furious harvest continues
It has been quite the non-stop harvest this year. Usually, we start in early September, then have a bit of a slower time until about the third week, when we pick up again and continue through October. This year, we've been going full-tilt since we began on August 27. Yesterday we brought in our Putnam Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast that's pictured here. That leaves us with just a few vineyards still waiting to be picked, including the typically last-in-line sites of Devil's Gulch and Docker Hill. As of now, all our remaining vineyards are on the schedule to come in over the next week, meaning we could be wrapped up by the end of September—whew! No wonder they're so tired over at production.

Vineyards just before picking.
Top: Fox Den Pinot, Rued Vineyard Chardonnay. Bottom: Shop Block Pinot Blanc, Jentoft Pinot
The wild ride continuesWhile our weather has been fairly mild since we started picking our grapes (other than Labor Day weekend heating up into the 90s), all the fruit seems to have decided it's ready at pretty much the same time. This means the winery has been working non-stop bringing in grapes every day. As of today, nearly all of our Russian River Valley fruit has been harvested, with the exception of our cold Mill Station Chardonnay, and our zin and syrah. Our outlier sites, like our Angel Camp in Anderson Valley and even our typically late Devil's Gulch pinot are on the calendar for next week. At this rate, we could be done with harvesting everything by the end of September, which would definitely be a record!
The great news is all the grapes look beautiful, with most coming in a little below our expected tonnage, which bodes for excellent quality. The pinots have some "hens and chicks" (tiny seedless berries next to full-size ones), which gives the wine great concentration and depth.
And after picking today:

In our Tasting Room:
Van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot NoirWe've updated our tasting flight for September, featuring a new line-up of wines, including one that we've never poured before in our Tasting Room: our 2018 van der Kamp Vineyard Pinot Noir.
We just started making wine from Van der Kamp Vineyard on Sonoma Mountain in 2017, but that wine didn't make it past our wine club. With the 2018 vintage, we produced a bit more, so are able to share it more widely. Situated at 1,500 feet, the site is considered sacred by the local Native Americans, who believe the world began on the top of Sonoma Mountain. It's also one of the oldest Pinot vineyards in Sonoma County, with plantings from 1952. The grapes are sold to an eclectic array of small wineries, with each receiving fruit from an assortment of their blocks. Dan loves it not only for the amazing place, but also for the heartfelt family of Martin, Dixie, Ulysses, and Malia Van der Kamp, who lovingly caretake the vineyard and property. The earthier and more savory Sonoma Mountain grapes provide a nice counterpoint to our fruit-focused Russian River Valley bottlings. Our 2018 Van Der Kamp Pinot leads with dusky aromas of Bing cherry, plum, and dried sage, along with a perfume of dried purple flowers. With time in the glass, savory/sweet notes of rhubarb and beet join in. In the mouth, it’s robust and sultry, bringing to mind the earth from which it comes. Black cherry is enveloped in spicy sandalwood and black tea, riding on a backbone of tight, fine tannins. The wound-up quality of the wine in its youth lets you know this will be a good cellar option. If you’re enjoying it young, go with something with a little fat, like chicken thighs, ribeye, or a cheeseburger, or cheeses with a salty bite like Valley Ford’s Estero Gold Reserve or an Asiago.

Our first grapes of the 2021 harvest are in! | Low inventory alert on our 2018s
August 27, 2021 15:21
OUR STORY | VISIT | WINE CLUB | SHOP
(Most of ) our 2021 Harvest Team
Three, two, one...harvest is here! Our first fruit for the 2021 harvest season arrived this morning, which we celebrated with a toast with the harvest team. First in was a lot of Pinot from our Ruxton Vineyard, which is located on Stoetz Ridge on the western edge of Russian River Valley. This is a component of our Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir, so it was only fitting that we toast the lot with a bottle of that wine—even the bin of grapes got a little taste!
While we've had a few hot days, it's been fairly cool overall so far for August, making the ripening season stretch out just the way we like it—as Dan says, it's like toasting a marshmallow perfectly, low and slow. Dutton Ranch has brought in about 400 tons so far, or about 10% of their expected tonnage. Most of this has been for sparkling wine, along with a little Pinot Noir and Viognier. The crop so far seems to be coming in a bit light due to the clusters not being as heavy as some years, likely due to the drought. Grapevines are an arid crop, so don't need a lot of water (and the dry-farmed chardonnay and old zin vines never get irrigated), and this reduced plumping in the berries should mean more concentrated flavors in the final wine.
Fun times at our Wine Club Summer Luau
Hula, leis, and smiles abounded at our first event in over a year! Thank you to all our wonderful club members and guests who joined us for this gathering at Dutton Ranch on Saturday. A special big shout-out to Barbara for her amazing authentic hula dance, to Sweet T's for their succulently tasty menu of Hawaiian favorites, and to Faith Aiko and the band (which includes Barbara's talented husband, Tadd) for their toe tapping tunes that provided an excellent backdrop to the afternoon.
Steve's vineyard walks were a highlight of the day, and since this was the first time we held the event in August (it's previously been a Spring party), guests actually got to see and taste grapes on the vine that were almost ready for picking.
We hope we see you at our next event!
Marin County in the NewsDevil's Gulch Vineyard has had a little flurry of activity this past week, written up in both Vinography and PinotFile.
The Prince of Pinot (who we think has some of best writing about Pinot around, as he comes to it from a real passion for the product) just highlighted his selection of elite California vineyard sites for Pinot, and had this to say about our 2018 Devil's Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noir:
"The seductive perfume of Pinot Noir is difficult to capture but this wine has it. Aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, blueberry, sweet mulch and tilled earth. Very polished and refined on the palate, with a discreet concentration of dark cherry and raspberry fruit with both a floral and earthy accent. Oak lends a complimentary hand. Exquisite balance with a prolonged finish. When tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle, the wine soared to new heights, the spiciness was unreal, and the wine became better and better over time in the glass. Angel sent. 96 points."2018 Devil's Gulch Vineyard Pinot Noir
He also is a big fan of our other Devil's Gulch wine, saying "Dan Goldfield crafts one of California's greatest Chardonnays from this vineyard." You can read his whole article on "Elite California Pinot Noir Vineyards" here.
Meanwhile, Alder Yarrow's Vinography had this to say about our 2018 Devil's Gulch Vineyard Chardonnay:
"Pale yellow-gold in the glass, this wine smells of lemon curd and a hint of pastry cream. In the mouth, creamy, silky flavors of lemon curd and vanilla crème brulee have a nice bright snap to them thanks to excellent acidity...9 points (out of 10)."2018 Devil's Gulch Vineyard Chardonnay

Harvest countdown | Sustainability in the vineyards and beyond
August 12, 2021 15:21
OUR STORY | VISIT | WINE CLUB | SHOP
Fox Den Vineyard - August 12, 2021 Docker Hill Vineyard - August 12, 2021 Harvest countdown continues...
We've had an eventful summer, welcoming guests to the winery from near and far. As we head into mid-August and the last growing days of the season, we hope for continuous warm days and no wildfires! Our hearts and warmest sympathies are with those affected by the Dixie fire in Plumas County.
While it's been hot in many parts of the country this summer, Sonoma County has experienced a more mild season with fewer heat spikes compared to previous years. It has been an ideal summer for the grapes and we're looking forward to an excellent harvest. We will likely harvest grapes from Green Valley first (right around Labor Day), as the Mendocino and coastal vineyards (Docker Hill Vineyard, Redwood Ridge Vineyard, McDougall Vineyard and Devil's Gulch Vineyard) have experienced cooler temperatures this Summer resulting in veraison occurring a bit later.
"As we begin harvest, drought conditions persist but we are in great shape for a fantastic vintage. All the early work the vineyard team has done is paying off. Our vines look healthy and well managed, and the fruit looks spectacular." - Steve Dutton

Sustainability: Green is Good
Dutton-Goldfield is committed to preserving the environment and being good citizens in our neighborhood. From our vineyards and our winery, to our tasting room and offices, we embrace green practices, reducing, reusing, and recycling as much as possible.
Our Sonoma County vineyards, including all of Dutton Ranch’s vineyards, are Certified Sustainable under Sonoma County’s landmark program that includes:
- Being socially responsible in how growers work with their neighbors, employees, and community. One example of this is that Dutton Ranch provides dorm-style housing for their vineyard workers.
- Being environmentally conscientious with farming and winery practices. Dutton Ranch’s vineyards have all passed the Fish Friendly Farming Certification Program, which creates and sustains water quality and habitat.
- Remaining diligent and viable as an economically mindful business, so it may be passed down to future generations.
In the packaging of our wines, we continue green practices to reduce our carbon footprint by:
Using infinitely recyclable glass, and purchasing bottles that are produced in the USA with over 40% post-consumer recycled content
- Utilizing glass bottles that are lightweight, clocking in at about 595 grams—no ridiculously heavy bottles here!
We follow through in our tasting room:
- We recycle our corks back to our cork supplier, where they are ground up and enjoy an afterlife as a new cork product, such as shoe soles.
- The tin capsules on the neck of the bottles we pour are also recycled via a local metal recycler.
- The case boxes are used for carry-out packaging for your wine purchase, which gives a second purpose to what would otherwise be a single-use carton.
We thank you for your support and for helping us be green!
Relax, it's almost here...here's to a great 2021 harvest!

Harvest Update: What is Veraison?
July 27, 2021 15:21
OUR STORY | VISIT | WINE CLUB | SHOP
Emerald Ridge Vineyard
Vineyard Update: What is Veraison?
One of the most important moments in a grapevine’s annual lifecycle is the onset of ripening, when the grapes turn from green to red and naturally begin to sweeten. This process is known as veraison.
Veraison also occurs in white grapes, but without the color changes–white grapes simply become more translucent.
Veraison is very much the tipping point in a grapevine’s annual lifecycle. It’s when the vine alters it’s focus from energy creation (through photosynthesis) to energy consumption where it concentrates its energy into making sweet grapes.
The changing color and development of other polyphenols act as protectors to the grapes from sun, wind and other stresses. Following the onset of veraison, the ripening process then takes anywhere from 30–70 days for the grapes to become fully ready to make wine!

Notes on each vintage
-
The 2013 vintage was a very correct vintage, with the vineyard qualities coming through in a light but complex way. The extra years in bottle have added breadth and savory notes to the fruit.
-
The 2014's are big and chunky now, with more earthy notes coming up, but still plenty of fruit for additional time in the bottle if you like.

In the Vineyards: the growing season continues
Our weather this summer seems to be especially quirky, going from super hot to drizzly fog. The vines don't seem to mind the back and forth, and are enjoying the season just fine, growing healthy canopies and carrying a nice crop—not too light and not too heavy. In the pictures above of Emerald Ridge Vineyard that we took today, you can see the leaves on the ground that have been pulled to let sun in (but not too much) and airflow get to the clusters. Veraison is coming up next, which we expect to see in a few weeks.
