2010 Freestone Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir (72.00)

To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", Freestone Hill is the Bull Goose Loony wine of 2010. In fact, my first tasting notes on the wine after bottling noted, "Insanely deep, focused and crystalline". Not to mention that you needed to be a bit nutty to enjoy farming and making this wine in 2010. After a cold and incessantly foggy summer, a short, massive heat spike in August, and a cold September, a meager 7 tons of fruit was harvested off six acres on September 29, just as a completely crazy late September heat spike was beginning. What did this all give us? A wine with off-the-charts depth, gobs of our beloved Freestone spice, and a plushness that we always hope for. The concentrated ruby color foretells the rest. The nose is black cherry, boysenberry, forest floor, clove and Asian spice, and evolves and broadens in the glass. In the mouth, its fruit tones of blackberry cobbler, strawberry and cranberry smoothie are wrapped in savory spice. It is the combination of ruby-like precision, alluring intricacy and hedonistic richness that make this a special offering. Eat whatever you want with it, or nothing, it'll be delicious--right now and for 10 to 15 years hence. Only 296 cases produced. 92 points, Stephen Tanzer.
