2008 Devil's Gulch Pinot Noir (58.00)

There are special wines from every vintage that just stand out in my mind, and the 2008 Devil's Gulch is certainly one of them. In this warm and unusually low humidity harvest season, this coldest and wettest of our pinot ranches performed like a champ. It is rarely said that either Devil's Gulch or Mark Pasternak are well behaved, but both are true for the 2008 season. Picked early for Devil's, on October first (all the Sonoma Pinot was off by September 13th that year), the clusters were black, tiny and concentrated. At a whopping 1.52 tons per acre, it produced wine with striking density, lushness and concentration. Aromatically, the definitive wild blackberry jumps from the glass, surrounded by coriander spice and wild cherry overtones. In the mouth, the wild berry fruits prevail, supported by exceptionally rich tannins and bright acidity. Let this wine breath a bit and you will be rewarded with a wonderful combination of restrained power and silky indulgence. And don't forget to lay some down for the long term--you will most certainly be rewarded. 535 cases produced.
