2015 was the earliest start to harvest for Dutton-Goldfield, and for Dutton Ranch as well. DG began our harvest season on August 18 with one of our younger pinot vineyards in Green Valley. Unlike most years when you have a start and then a gap before the next lot of wine comes in, the pace was fairly steady, with warm weather keeping things moving along throughout late August and into September. We wrapped up our last vineyards just six weeks later, with our straggler pinot coming in September 28. This is typically about when the majority of our pinot vineyards are just coming in to the winery. Even our Syrah, which usually comes in late October, was in on September 21.

The good news is the quality of the fruit from 2015 should make excellent wines. The bad news is the quantity will be down considerably, with our chardonnay about 20% below a typical yield, and our pinot noir down nearly 50%. This was mostly due to our cool and damp May weather, right when the vines were setting their fruit. Below is a picture of two Freestone Hill pinot clusters to give you an idea of how things looked.

Now Dan and Jeff are turning their attention to getting our remaining 2014 wines into bottle whiile the 2015s are settling into barrel.
