WHAT THE PRESS IS SAYING ABOUT US

"California has thousands of winery tasting rooms, but the 75 here offer new and unforgettable experiences...those who reserve a seat for the new Wine and Cheese Flight can compare four great wines, like Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir, each paired with a local cheese."
~ Food & Wine Magazine "Best California Wineries to Visit"

"The wines aim to express the "the cool foggy heart" of their western Russian River home. Dutton-Goldfield produces excellent Pinot Noir from several different sites--both blends and single-vineyard bottlings that capture the distinctive characteristics of their terroirs. One standout comes from Freestone Hill, a cool-climate corner of the Russian River AVA that is emerging as a Pinot star. Set in a modern, green, barn-like structure, the casual yet classy tasting room offers multiple options. To learn the most about the wines, choose the seated tasting that takes place on the patio or inside by the fire depending on season. A knowledgeable host pours five limited production wines and describes the vineyards from which they come. The winery also features wine-and-cheese and picnic-and-Pinot flights."

~ Wine Enthusiast

"It's risky to name the best producers...however, here are some of the best cool-climate Pinots: DeLoach, Dutton-Goldfield, Joseph Swan, Lynmar, Marimar Estate and Merry Edwards. Rochioli's and Williams Selyem's finest vineyards are located in the slightly warmer north...the best wines are produced in small quantities and are expensive. Compared to top Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, however, Russian River Valley Pinot Noir remains a bargain."

2013 DEVIL'S GULCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This is a memorable wine, with enticing and complex aromas of gorgeous ripe fruit accented by cedar, tea and forest floor. The palate echos the aromas with vibrant and rich flavors, while the mouthfeel is firm and bolstered by fine-grained tannins...94 points & Editors' Choice."

2013 FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This tightly wound wine opens in the glass, with intense, bright acidity that wraps around herbal, minty undertones. Blackberry, raspberry and clove give it plenty of varietal classicism, but it's the strong earthy loam and forest floor that provide intrigue and elegance...93 points."

2013 RUED VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"Caramel and butterscotch greet the nose on entry before lushly lean streaks of apple skin and mango weave their way on the dappled palate. There's a compelling crispness to the finish...93 points & Editors' Choice."

2013 MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"High-toned in crisp cranberry and raspberry, this wine offers wave upon wave of nuanced orange peel and dried herb, with bursts of black cherry along the way...94 points."

2013 ANGEL CAMP VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This has lots of fresh, lively fruit characteristics in the aroma and the flavor. It's well balanced, showing good firm acidity and fine tannins to blanket the ripe cherry and plum flavors. It's medium bodies, very appetizing and agile...91 points."

2013 MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"This is such a refreshing take on the variety, still robust and rich in body, yet possessed of firm acidity and a crispness of cherry kirsch and pomegranate. It practically shouts violets and roses on the nose, following through on the palate with a delicacy of power that's entirely surprising. The finish is a mix of allspice and white pepper...92 points."

2013 CHERRY RIDGE VINEYARD SYRAH
"Deliciously varietal in its huge offering of white pepper and robust black and blue fruit, this well-crafted wine boasts a lithe texture that invites sip after sip. It remains light footed throughout the palate, yet with enough complexity and balancing weight before the refined finish gives a final hit of juiciness...95 points & Editors' Choice.."

2015 GREEN VALLEY VINEYARD GEWURZTRAMINER

"Juicy acidity buoys layers of wet stone, crisp apple and white peach in this lovely aromatic white. Textured, subtle and complext, it's fresh in the glass, accented in floral rose petals, grapefruit and lemon peel, dry and fermented entirely in stainless steel...94 points."

2015 CHILENO VALLEY VINEYARD RIESLING

"This delicious wine smells very fresh, like putting your nose into a fruit salad. It taste more dry, like lemons and crisp apples. Medium bodied, it offers good acidity and appetizing balance...91 points."

2014 DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
This wine is put together from multiple vineyard sources, including the well-known Morelli Lane and Widdoes, all farmed by the Duttons. Larger in production than many of the vineyard-designates, it offers baked bread and juicy overtones of cranberry-raspberry layered atop luxuriously toasted oak. It'll show well at the table...91 points."

2014 DUTTON RANCH CHARDONNAY

"Crafted from six vineyards within the Dutton family's holdings, this is a pretty wine, smooth and supple with a balance of acidity and light body. Citrus and apple vie for attention with a slight tropical note and expansiveness of ginger cookie and toffee...93 points."

2015 SHOP BLOCK PINOT BLANC
"Light and fresh, this is a consistently delicious aromatic white from the appellatin, a chiseled study in white peach, pear and lilting acidity. Floral in zesty grapefruit, it adds a streak of ginger spice to the finish, with just the right amount of rich body to add weight...92 points."

2013 ANGEL CAMP VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"An attractively layered nose combines notes of both red and blue pinot fruit with discreet spice and sandalwood hints. There is good vibrancy and volume to the delicious and appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors thanks to the abundant and mouth coating dry extract, all wrapped in an agreeably dry, clean and focused finale. While this could be enjoyed now, I would advise holding it for 3 to 5 years first to round off the supporting structure...90 points."

2013 AZAYA RANCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Discreet hints of herbal tea and violet sit atop the dark cherry and raspberry scented nose. Here the middle weight flavors are a bit more refined because even though the tannins are dense, they're also quite fine on the firm, focused and impressively persistent finale. While this compact and backward effort is already solidly complex, it seems clear from the quality of the underlying material that more will develop with time. Worth considering if you have the patience to wait...92 points."

2013 DEVIL'S GULCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"A brooding and reticent nose consists of red currant, floral and sandalwood aromas that display wisps of spice. Once again there is good volume and punch to the rounded yet concentrated medium-bodied flavors that also coat the palate with dry extract while also buffering the supporting tannins on the firm but not hard to austere finale. Interestingly, this is robust yet not quite as structured as the Azaya Ranch, though it is clear that this too will need at least some bottle age to reveal its full potential...91 points."

2013 EMERALD RIDGE VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"A pungent and much more expressive nose merges notes of menthol and incense with those of dark berry fruit liqueur and spice aromas. There is a highly seductive mouth feel to the broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors that possess evident power that continues onto the complex, well-balanced and highly persistent finale. This is good stuff because while it's a big wine, it remains harmonious with nothing out of place. Again this is recommended, provided that you intend to cellar it for at least 5 years or so even though it should reward up to a decade...92 points."

2013 FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR

"This is slightly riper with an overtly spiced array of various dark berry fruit, plum and again sandalwood hints. There is similar volume and mid-palate concentration to the round, supple and velvety middle weight flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel while delivering sneaky good persistence and beautiful complexity on the dusty and well-balanced finale. This is a bit less structured than the Emerald Ridge but the length and depth are most impressive...93 points."

2013 FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"A strikingly spicy and overtly floral nose of dark berry fruit liqueur-like aromas lead to attractively rich, textured and once again caressing medium-bodied flavors that are succulent to the point of being lush, all wrapped in a dusty, delicious and forward finale. While not quite ready for prime time, this could be enjoyed young if desired...90 points."

2013 MCDOUGALL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"This is notably higher-toned with softly spicy aromas of red cherry, pomegranate and a hint of spicy Asian-style herbal tea. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavor is much like that of the Fox Den in that it is pliant and caressing though with perhaps slightly better volume while delivering good persistence...To be sure this is very pretty...89 points."

2013 FOX DEN VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"Silky and just plain delicious, this comes from a sandy ridge on the cool western edge of Green Valley, the vines planted by winemaker Dan Goldfield and grower Steve Dutton in 2002. The fruit has the clean, snappy freshness of plum skin, along with a cool, foresty aroma that suggests bay leaf. It's ready to drink with grilled salmon..92 points."

2012 MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"From a warm, sunny knoll above the cool Green Valley, this dry-farmed, 19th-century planting gave a silky, polished zin in 2012, with a gentle mulberry tone to its fruit, warming and plump at the outset, then turning toward delicate with mouthwatering acidity...92 points."

2014 DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"...the 2014 is wholesome, transparent and silky, with a violet-scented lift that's already delicious. Drink it this summer or next with grilled salmon steaks...92 points."

2013 CHERRY RIDGE VINEYARD SYRAH

"Grown on an east-facing hllside in Green Valley, this is a syrah with a sunny disposition, its bright lavender hue mirroring its clean line of flavor. It's lithe and cool, as if morning light ripened the fruit to a blackberry sheen while shadowy late afternoons drew in savory green peppercorn and Douglas fir aromas...92 points."

2013 DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR

"Packs in a medley of dark berry, mocha, currant, blueberry and anise flavors. Intense and potent given the tannic muscle, yet graceful and elegant on the finish, where this ends with density and persistence. Drink now through 2021...91 points."

~ Connoisseur's Guide to California Wine

2014 WALKER HILL VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"This winery deserves far more credit than it ever got for its balanced wines back in the days when some journalists were falling all over themselves in singing the praises of higher acidities and lower alcohols in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Maybe they just weren't part of the "pretty boy" crowd, or maybe we are just cynical about that movement since wineries like this one, Marimar and others had long made wines that were of that newly glorified style. Be that as it may, here is yet another lovely, balanced, deep, promising wine from the capable hands of Dutton-Goldfield. Its bright Gala apple fruitiness and its supportive creme brulee richness start it off right, and, although tightly knit in structure, it stays in focus from front to back. It is nicely balanced and layered with both rich and lively facets as it opens, and like many Dutton-Goldfield wines, it is very certain to improve with bottle age...93 points."

2014 RUED VINEYARD CHARDONNAY
"While not as structured as its mate above, this bottling is also a tad less rich overall and shows its firm side with equal or greater vigor. That said, it is a very clear and successful version of the minerally, lower alcohol approach to Chardonnay, and it is a wine that we would happily partner with all manner of tangy shellfish dishes from mussels in a briny broth to a platter of fresh-shucked bivalves served with a classic mignonette...90 points."

2013 CHERRY RIDGE VINEYARD SYRAH
"Here is the classic "wait on it" wine. Its tight yet precise Syrah aromas of blackberry, roast beef and spice are solidly on point, and while there is not the oft-seen ripe and succulent fruitiness on offer at this point, there is nonetheless a fair measure of convincing fruit looking set to emerge...91 points."

2014 DUTTON RANCH VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
"...slightly restrained style but not one that tips to acidy stiffness...fairly sleek, firmly built Pinot that keeps precise cherry-like fruit in its sights at all times. It is balanced to pertness and tightens upa bit in the latter going but promises to unfold with age and is certain to benefit by a couple of years before pouring...89 points."

2014 Dutton Ranch Chardonnay
"...well-structured wines of great varietal precision. In this instance, youthful, nicely extracted fruit assumes center stage early and never drifts to the wings, and, while tight and quite firmly balanced, the wine never errs to wiry tartness. It can be enjoyed now as a cleansing foil to the likes of steamed mussels or richer oyster recipes, but it is a couple of years away from showing all that it is...90 points."

2013 MORELLI LANE VINEYARD ZINFANDEL
"Much in keeping with Dutton-Goldfield's temperate winemaking style and a Zinfandel that is directed by defined, berry-like fruit far more than it is by emphatic ripeness, this well-crafted effort is likely to be seen as a little tame in some quarters, but it more than makes up in manners for what it may lack in swagger and will accordingly make useful drinking with a wide range of foods...89 points."

~ Wine Review Online

2014 GREEN VALLEY VINEYARD GEWURZTRAMINER
"A truly dry gewurztraminer is a tricky proposition and thus a bit rare, especially in California. Dutton-Goldfield sources its Gewurztraminer from one of the coldest appellations in California, virtually assuring slow ripening with low sugar levels and plenty of acidity. Once again they've nailed it with a crisp, refreshing gewurz that offers complexity without unwanted levels of residual sugar. On the nose there is the scent of rose petal and spice, followed on the palate by notes of honeysuckle, citrus and tropical fruits...92 points." ~ Robert Whitley

2013 CHERRY RIDGE VINEYARD SYRAH
"...textbook example of how to handle this important French grape variety and kickstart its popularity...a smoky, meaty syrah that could stand up to Guigal or Chapoutier in anyone's blind tasting. It shows dark notes of blackbery and black currant, with an overlay of smoke and spice, and just a hint of the roasted game aroma that makes the wines of the northern Rhone so attractive...96 points." ~ Robert Whitley

2014 Shop Block Pinot Blanc
"...that rare flash of brilliance for this grape on our shores. It exhibits Alsatian richness on the palate, with mouth-coating generosity at the same time that it delivers mouth-watering acidity. Floral and spicy, it also shows aromas of red citrus fruits such as tangerine and nectarine, mingled with hints of lemon oil and grapefruit. Remarkably complex and rewarding, surely this is one of the finest, if not the finest, Pinot Blancs in America...96 points." ~ Robert Whitley

2014 DUTTON RANCH CHARDONNAY
"...is what every chardonnay producer in the New World should aspire to. It is rich and layered without being sweet or heavy; it shows mouthwatering juicy acidity and has aromas of lemon creme and ripe pear with hints of baking spice. From beginning to end, this is a stunning and delicious expression of a California cool-climate chardonnay at its finest...94 points."

2014 DUTTON RANCH PINOT NOIR
"Fresh and floral on the palate, this vintage of Dutton Ranch offers juicy red fruits, hints of spice and exquisite balance in a somewhat delicate package. The finish shows a bit of grip that will smooth out as the wine ages another year or so...91 points."

~ Vinography

"Light gold in the glass, this wine smells of lemon curd and buttered popcorn. In the mojth, lemon curd, cold cream, and the vanilla of oak have a lively tug of war across the palate, with lemon curd and pink grapefruit ultimately prevailing in the finish. Great acidity...8.5-9."

2013 FREESTONE HILL VINEYARD PINOT NOIR
